1999 Rideau Canal Boating Advisory

Rideau Canal
August 09, 1999

As a result of the prolonged hot, dry conditions experienced this summer, some lake levels are lower than normal, particularly Big Rideau Lake and Cranberry Lake. Despite our best efforts to conserve any available water, levels on both Big Rideau and Cranberry Lake are at October 1st levels. Big Rideau Lake level is continuing to drop daily and without any substantial precipitation will drop below chart datum (the level at which 5ft of water is available within the navigation channel). Boaters are asked to exercise caution while traversing Big Rideau Lake, problem areas could exist in that portion of Big Rideau Lake below Rideau Ferry, known as Lower Rideau Lake.

Through navigation would still be provided, however, any vessels drawing more than 4ft should contact the Rideau Canal Office for up-to- date water level information.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Kerry McGonegal, Water Management Officer at 1-800-230-0016.
